The
53barchetta story so far… David Wright is a Maserati enthusiast. He has owned some 10 models of these iconic cars over the past 20 years. A New Zealander, in 2000 he had the opportunity to build a replica of the famous Maserati Barchetta A6GCS. The first copy was taken straight off an original car with all the idiosyncrasies of the hand made body. The mechanicals are taken from a 1996 Maserati 222 SE; 2.8 litre bi-turbo motor 206 Kw, 5 speed Getrag box disk brakes etc. The reaction has been overwhelming with much encouragement both in NZ and Australia to create more copies. To this end a serious investment has been made in setting up the project for high quality production. The new mould is complete slightly changed to facilitate an easier construction and the use of a wider variety of wheels. David Wright joined forces with Dave Frow and engineer and another enthusiast for the project, to set up a company to progress the vision. The internationally recognised constructor of Cobra replicas, Graham Berry Racecars created the next prototype, which will incorporated easily obtainable local components including high performance modern motors of similar weight and power output to the original. Given further refinement and development the production models are based on the Alfa Romeo 2.0 litre JTS motor, chassis as per the original with de dion rear axle. Disk brakes are a logical upgrade from the original alloy drums. Wire wheels complete the picture. The result captures the magic of the original design and performance with the practicality of modern componentry. |
