In 1953, when Maserati upgraded the earlier A6GCS with a new aerodynamic body designed by Medardo Fantuzzi, they produced one of the most beautiful classic sports cars of the era.

The mechanicals were also updated with a 2 litre, six-cylinder, twin overhead camshaft engine. With twin spark ignition, this developed 170 hp at 7,300 rpm.

With its Borrani spoked wheels, small Perspex windscreen and outstanding performance, the A6GCS/53 quickly became a huge success in the hands of both works and privateer drivers.

The racing record is perhaps best illustrated by looking at results from the tough Mille Miglia road race:
1953, 1st in 2000cc sports car classic, Emilio Giletti
1954, 2nd & 3rd in class, Luigi Musso
1955, 4th overall, and 1st in class, Francesco Giardini
1956, 1st in class, Giorgio Scarlatti

The cars won the 1953 Italian Sports Car Championship outright and won the same championship for the 2000cc class the following year. This is just a sample of the many successes that made this one of the most famous Maseratis of all time.

Between 1953 and 1955 a total of 52 cars were produced, of which 44 had the Fantuzzi designed body, including the five retained as Maserati works cars.
